A baby nurse in Sacramento is a wonderful option for many women. A mother/baby nurse is a registered nurse who comes to your home to help in the first few weeks after a baby is born. She does many of the same things your postpartum nurse does in the hospital, only she's at your house. She may do the following:
- Assesses and helps mothers and babies with any medical issues
- Educates and supports new parents on baby care including diapers, bathing, swaddling, soothing and other techniques
- Helps if your baby's not getting enough to eat
- Teaches you what to do if your baby is sick or becoming sick
- Teaches cord/circumcision care
- Assists with basic breastfeeding, including pumping
- May provide nighttime care so you can get some extra sleep
- Very helpful with mothers of twins, premature or sick babies
Differences between a Postpartum Doula and Mother/Baby Nurse
A mother/baby nurse is a registered nurse and can help and possibly treat minor medical issues. Postpartum doulas are not RNs, and cannot help with medical issues. Postpartum doulas have a support only role. Most mother/baby nurses will not assist much with errand running, chores or cooking as postpartum doulas do.
