Prenatal Vitamins
Your care provider may want you to take prenatal vitamins either before you get pregnant or during your pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins help with your pregnancy nutrition and vitamins. Luckily there are many different kinds of vitamins, including chewable prenatal vitamins. So why should you take the vitamins and what if you don’t want to?
The Importance of Prenatal Vitamins
While it’s possible to get enough pregnancy nutrition and vitamins from your diet, it’s unlikely to happen in the United States. Most Americans don’t get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals in their diet just for general health. But pregnant women need extra vitamins. You need additional iron, calcium and folic acid among other vitamins and minerals for your health and the health of your baby, and you can get these from your prenatal vitamins.
The Size of Prenatal Vitamins
It’s not enough that early pregnancy causes morning sickness for some women, but those prenatal vitamins you’re supposed to be taking may be triggering your morning sickness. If this happens to you, let your care provider know. They may suggest other vitamins you can take, like children’s chewable vitamins until the nausea subsides. You also may find taking the vitamins with food helps too.
Prenatal Vitamins and Morning Sickness
Some women find that the size of prenatal vitamins makes them hard to swallow. This is because of the extra vitamins in the pills. If you’re having difficulty, talk to your care provider about taking smaller prenatal pills. You could also purchase chewable prenatal vitamins, but check with your care provider first to make sure they have all the vitamins and minerals you need. Some providers will also let you take a children’s chewable vitamin if you’re having problems with your prenatal vitamins.
When to Take your Prenatal Vitamins
You’ll want to take your vitamins in the morning or right before bed. If you’re taking multiple vitamin,s including chewable prenatal vitamins, some experts recommend spreading them out during the day to help your body absorb them to ensure you’re getting the best pregnancy nutrition and vitamins. If your stomach becomes upset after taking your vitamins, take them with food.
